About the game
What is Legatus Arena?
It is an online arena game where everyone shares one persistent world. You steer a single legatus while your legion follows in formation and fights on its own. Collect aurei to recruit soldiers, then strike down rival legati to take most of their legions.
What does "legatus" mean?
A legatus was the senior officer in command of a Roman legion. In the game it is your character. The plural is legati.
What kind of game is it?
It is an action game with light real-time strategy. Your reflexes decide duels between commanders, while your choice of doctrine and fights decides how your army grows.
What games is it similar to?
If you enjoy Agar.io, Slither.io or Diep.io, the idea will feel familiar: join instantly, grow from small to huge, and lose it all in a moment. The difference is that you grow an army of Roman soldiers instead of a single body, and a kill hands you most of your rival's army.
Is it the same game as Legion Arena?
No. Legion Arena is a separate Roman wargame for PC from 2005. Legatus Arena is an unrelated multiplayer browser game at legatusarena.io.
Playing
Is Legatus Arena free?
Yes. The whole game is free to play and has no purchases.
Do I need to download anything or make an account?
No. Open legatusarena.io, choose a name and press Enter the arena. There are no accounts and no installation.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the mobile browser with a touch joystick and Strike and Dash buttons, in portrait or landscape. It also works in a browser on desktop, with keyboard and mouse.
How many people can play at once?
Up to 30 human players share the one world at a time. If it is full, the game keeps retrying until a place opens.
Are there bots?
Yes. Computer-controlled legions keep the world busy, so there is always someone to fight. As more people join, bots leave, until only 2 remain.
Can I play with friends?
Everyone who opens the site joins the same world, so you and your friends will be on the same battlefield. There are no private rooms, teams or chat.
Rules
How do I get more soldiers?
Collect aurei from the field and soldiers recruit by themselves. The fastest way to grow is to kill a rival legatus: 60% of their surviving soldiers join you, or 75% if their legion was larger than yours. The how to play guide has every unit and cost.
What happens when I die?
Your legion goes to your killer or runs away, and you see a summary of your run. You can then rise again with a fresh legion, and change your name, colour or doctrine.
Is my progress saved?
No. There are no accounts or saved scores. Each life starts fresh, although the world itself keeps running.
What if my connection drops?
Your legatus stays in the world for 15 seconds while the game reconnects, and you carry on if you return in time. It can still be attacked while you are away.
